Xavier Aptitude Test

XAT 2027 guide: XLRI's MBA entrance test, accepted by 250+ institutes, with Decision Making and GK sections, its marking scheme and how to prepare.

Conducted byXLRI – Xavier School of Management, on behalf of XAMIOfficial website ↗

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national MBA/PGDM entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). XAT 2027 is scheduled for Sunday, 3 January 2027. Indian candidates need it for XLRI's two-year programmes, and the XAT 2027 bulletin says the score is recognised by over 250 institutes. It suits anyone taking CAT who wants a second shot a few weeks later, provided they are willing to prepare for one section CAT does not have: Decision Making.

Exam pattern

The pattern below is from the official XAT 2026 overview and instructions; the xatonline.in home page shows the same structure for XAT 2027. Question counts are given officially as approximate.

Section Questions (approx.) Time What it tests
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA & LR) 26 Part 1: 170 minutes shared Reading comprehension, critical and analytical reasoning, vocabulary, grammar, para-jumbles, cloze tests
Decision Making (DM) 21 Part 1 (shared) Personal and professional scenarios that need critical thinking, problem-solving and prioritisation
Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI) 28 Part 1 (shared) Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, modern maths; interpreting and analysing data
General Knowledge (GK) 20 Part 2: 10 minutes 8 static GK and 12 current affairs questions

Notes on the pattern:

  • Two timed parts, no sectional limits inside Part 1. The three Part 1 sections share 170 minutes. You may start with any section and switch between them at any time. When the timer reaches zero, Part 1 locks and Part 2 (GK) begins.
  • Marking. Each question carries 1 mark. A wrong answer in Part 1 costs 0.25 marks. You can leave up to 8 questions unattempted without penalty; each further unattempted question costs 0.10 marks.
  • GK is used only by XLRI. There is no negative marking in GK. The XAT site says GK does not count towards your overall percentile, and the GK score is used only in XLRI's own selection process.
  • Calculator. The XAT 2027 FAQs say a scientific on-screen calculator is available in the exam interface. Physical calculators are not allowed.
  • Single slot. XAT is held in one slot, so scores are not normalised across sessions.
  • Eligibility (XAT 2027). A recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years in any discipline; final-year students finishing by 11 June 2027 may apply.

Patterns can change between editions, so check the latest notices on xatonline.in before the exam.

What each section tests

The topics below are taken from the official section descriptions. XLRI publishes past papers (2018–2024) on xatonline.in, which are the best guide to how these topics actually appear.

Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning

The official description lists critical and analytical reasoning, reading comprehension (including poems, cartoons and passages), vocabulary, English grammar, para-jumbles and cloze tests. This is wider than CAT's verbal section: expect grammar and vocabulary questions and short critical reasoning items, as well as passages that are not conventional prose.

Decision Making

Decision Making presents scenarios from personal and professional life and asks you to choose the most appropriate course of action. The official description says it tests critical thinking, problem-solving and prioritisation. Questions often weigh fairness, stakeholder interests and practical constraints, so there is rarely a purely mathematical answer. XLRI's own site notes that XAT preparation overlaps with other MBA entrance exams except for this section.

Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation

The official description names arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern maths, along with data interpretation that requires "clear interpretation, summarisation and insightful analysis" of data. This section has the most questions in Part 1.

General Knowledge

Twenty questions in 10 minutes: 8 on static GK and 12 on current affairs. Only XLRI uses this score.

How it compares with CAT

XAT and CAT overlap a great deal in verbal, reading and quantitative skills, so most CAT preparation carries over. The main differences are structural.

XAT 2027 CAT
Sections VA & LR, Decision Making, QA & DI, GK VARC, DILR, QA
Section timing 170 minutes shared across three sections; GK separately timed Each section has its own timer
Unique content Decision Making; GK (XLRI only) None of these
Penalty for skipping Yes, after 8 unattempted questions No
Timing in the year Early January (3 January 2027) Late November (CAT 2026: 29 November 2026)

Some general points, which you should treat as tendencies rather than rules:

  • Decision Making has no CAT equivalent. It is judgement-based, so it needs its own practice.
  • The verbal section is broader. XAT explicitly includes grammar, vocabulary and cloze tests, which recent CAT papers have not emphasised.
  • Freedom to allocate time. Because Part 1 has no sectional limits, you can spend more time where you are strongest. That also means you have to manage the clock yourself.
  • Marking is different. Every XAT question is worth one mark, there is a penalty for wrong answers, and leaving too many questions blank also costs marks.

Preparation tips

  • Start Decision Making early. It is the one section CAT preparation does not cover. Work through DM sets from XLRI's official past papers, and for each one write down why the right option beats the second-best. The reasoning matters more than the answer.
  • Plan your 170 minutes. With no sectional timers in Part 1, decide in advance roughly how long you will spend on each section and in what order, then test that plan in mocks.
  • Mind the skipping penalty. Leaving more than eight questions blank costs 0.10 marks each, while a wrong answer costs 0.25. Have a clear rule for when an educated guess is worth it.
  • Broaden your verbal practice. Add grammar, vocabulary and cloze-test practice to your reading comprehension work, and practise unusual passages such as poems.
  • Take GK seriously if XLRI is your target. It does not affect your percentile, but XLRI uses it in selection. Short daily reading is enough to build a base.
  • Use the official mocks. XAT 2027 has official mock tests on 31 October and 1 November 2026 for candidates registered by 28 October, on the real exam platform.
  • Carry your CAT preparation forward. XAT falls a few weeks after CAT, so keep doing timed practice through December.
