The Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is an MBA/PGDM entrance test conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA) since 1988. AIMA holds it four times a year, in February, May, September and December, and candidates can take it on paper, on computer, or both. The score is valid for one year, and AIMA's participating list covers B-schools across all four zones of India. MAT suits candidates who want a flexible back-up to CAT, a later attempt in the same admission season, or a route into the many private institutes that use it. Details below are from AIMA's official MAT website and its published test structure as of October 2026, for the December 2026 cycle. Confirm them on mat.aima.in before you register.

Exam pattern
AIMA's MAT website and FAQ give this structure: five sections of 30 questions each, 150 questions to be attempted in 120 minutes.
| Section | Questions | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| I. Language Comprehension | 30 | Reading passages, error spotting, vocabulary, sentence completion |
| II. Intelligence & Critical Reasoning | 30 | Selection puzzles, statements and conclusions, assertion and reason, blood relations |
| III. Mathematical Skills | 30 | Arithmetic word problems at roughly class 10 (CBSE) level |
| IV. Data Analysis & Sufficiency | 30 | Charts and data sets, data sufficiency, quantity comparison |
| V. Economic & Business Environment | 30 | Economy, business, trade and policy awareness |
Notes on the pattern:
- Negative marking. AIMA states a penalty of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. AIMA's pages do not spell out the marks for a correct answer.
- Timing. AIMA states a single 120-minute duration for all 150 questions and does not describe sectional time limits.
- Scoring. Each of the five sections is reported on a scale of 0 to 100. The composite score runs from 200 to 800 and gives the five sections equal weight. Each score comes with a "percentile below" figure. Since the February 2021 MAT, raw scores have been normalised across sessions before scaling.
- Modes and fees. One mode (PBT or CBT) costs ₹2,300; both modes cost ₹4,000. Taking both lets you send your better score.
- Score reporting. Registration includes sending scores to five management institutes, or seven if you take both modes. Each additional institute costs ₹118 including GST.
- Eligibility. Graduates in any discipline can take MAT, and final-year undergraduates can appear provisionally. There is no age limit and no work-experience requirement.
What each section tests
AIMA does not publish a topic syllabus. The topics below come from AIMA's official "Test Structure and Sample Questions" document, which says the samples do not necessarily show the types or difficulty of actual questions. AIMA expects a general standard of an Indian graduate, and class 10 (CBSE) knowledge for Mathematical Skills.
Language Comprehension
A reading passage with inference and main-idea questions, spotting the erroneous part of a sentence, one-word substitution, and filling in blanks with the right pair of words.
Intelligence & Critical Reasoning
A selection (team-formation) puzzle with conditions, statement-and-conclusion questions, assertion and reason, and family-relation questions.
Mathematical Skills
Arithmetic: pipes and cisterns, simple interest, number puzzles, percentage errors in measurement, and investment problems.
Data Analysis & Sufficiency
Questions on pie charts, a caselet-style data problem, data sufficiency (deciding whether one or both statements are enough to answer), and quantity comparison (deciding whether quantity A or quantity B is greater).
Economic & Business Environment
Current economic and business awareness: international reports (for example, IMF classifications), tax slabs, the minimum support price, World Bank reports and India's international agreements. This is a general-awareness section in all but name.
How it compares with CAT
MAT and CAT test overlapping skills, but MAT's format is quite different.
| MAT | CAT | |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | AIMA | The IIMs |
| Frequency | Four times a year | See our CAT guide |
| Mode | Paper, computer, or both | See our CAT guide |
| Sections | Five, including Economic & Business Environment | VARC, DILR, QA |
| Questions and time | 150 questions in 120 minutes | See our CAT guide |
| General awareness | Yes, 30 questions | No |
| Data sufficiency | A named part of Section IV | Not a named section |
Some general points, which you should treat as tendencies rather than rules:
- Speed matters more. With 150 questions in 120 minutes, you have less than a minute per question on average.
- Breadth over depth. Reasoning question types such as assertion and reason or statements and conclusions are not typical of CAT, and Section V needs general-awareness preparation.
- Retakes are easy. Because MAT runs four times a year and both modes can be taken in one cycle, a weak attempt can be followed by another within a few months.
See our CAT guide for the CAT format.
How Pareto Academy helps
| MAT section | Covered by Pareto? | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Language Comprehension | Yes (reading); Partly (grammar, vocabulary) | VARC questions, daily reading, RC strategy; error-spotting and vocabulary drills are limited |
| Intelligence & Critical Reasoning | Partly | DILR questions for selection and arrangement puzzles; statement-conclusion, assertion-reason and blood-relation items are not covered yet |
| Mathematical Skills | Yes | Quant questions, formula sheet, improve your Quant score |
| Data Analysis & Sufficiency | Partly | DILR questions for data interpretation; data sufficiency and quantity comparison are limited |
| Economic & Business Environment | Not yet | Regular newspaper reading |
| MAT-pattern mocks | Not yet | Our mocks follow the CAT pattern; use AIMA's official sample questions for the MAT format |
For Economic & Business Environment, read a national newspaper's business pages daily and keep notes on budgets, taxes, RBI policy, trade agreements and reports from bodies such as the IMF and World Bank.
Colleges that accept it
AIMA's participating list changes from test to test, and each institute sets its own admission criteria, so check the institute's own prospectus. Examples from AIMA's official list of participating B-schools (October 2026):
- Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), Greater Noida – BIMTECH's own admissions page accepts MAT 2026-27 for its PGDM Insurance Business Management and PGDM Retail Management programmes (not for PGDM or PGDM International Business).
- Christ University – School of Business and Management (Bengaluru, Pune and Ghaziabad campuses)
- KIIT School of Management, Bhubaneswar
- Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore
- Jaipuria Institute of Management (Noida, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Jaipur and Indore)
- Institute of Public Enterprise, Hyderabad
- School of Management Studies, University of Hyderabad
None of these has a Pareto college page yet; browse our colleges page for others.
Preparation tips
- Pick your mode deliberately. If you are unsure, the dual-mode option (₹4,000) gives you two attempts in one cycle, and you send the better score.
- Train for pace. Practise sets of 30 questions in about 24 minutes so that 150 in 120 feels normal.
- Do not skip Section V. Economic & Business Environment carries the same weight in the composite as the other four sections. Daily business news reading is the only real preparation.
- Learn the reasoning formats. Statement-conclusion, assertion-reason and data sufficiency follow fixed answer conventions. Learn the conventions once so that you are not rereading instructions in the exam.
- Guess carefully. The penalty is 0.25 per wrong answer, so eliminating even one option before guessing usually helps, but blind guessing across a whole section does not.
- Use AIMA's sample questions to see the official style, then keep your CAT quant and reading practice going.
